About the course
Manual handling is part of everyday work in childcare. Staff may need to lift or assist children, move toys and equipment, carry supplies, reposition furniture, or handle cots, buggies and storage boxes. Poor handling techniques can lead to back injuries, strains, sprains and other musculoskeletal problems. This short Level 1 awareness course provides childcare staff with practical guidance on recognising manual handling risks and using safer handling techniques in the workplace. 0.5 CPD Hours
What You'll Learn
By the end of this course, you will be able to: * Explain what manual handling means in a childcare setting. * Recognise common manual handling hazards and injury risks. * Identify risks linked to lifting children, toys, furniture, cots, buggies and supplies. * Use the TILE method to assess a manual handling task. * Plan a lift before starting. * Adopt a stable position with one foot slightly in front of the other. * Use safer lifting, carrying and lowering techniques. * Keep loads close to the body and avoid twisting, stooping and jerking. * Understand that HSE lifting figures are guidelines, not legal maximums. * Know when to ask for help or use suitable handling equipment. * Understand when lifting or assisting a child requires a separate risk assessment. * Report hazards, injuries and manual handling concerns appropriately.

This course is an awareness course and should not be described as a regulated qualification. Employers must still provide workplace-specific instruction, risk assessments and practical training where required.
